Happy Independence Day!

If you are reading this on July 4th, chances are you aren’t currently living in town, or have good reception on your phone. Last night’s “fireworks show” was the result of the substation down the road exploding. Looking at the carnage, local experts say it looks like somebody hurled some lawn chairs over the fence until one finally hit something that started an arc and caused an explosion. Utility crews are working on it, and the Sheriff’s office is investigating.

Because of the commotion, some of the off-grid families are hiding out in town today. That explosion was near their camp and itĀ  scared the bejeezus outta them, so pleaseĀ  be respectful and keep your distance. Remember, people tend to make them nervous, even people they like.

I think it is a testament to this community, this state, and our nation, that we can have this sort of relationship. We are a nation of folks with a long and cherished history of looking up and saying “Thanks, but no thanks.” We are deeply moved by the trust placed in us by these families, and grateful to the people and institutions that work so hard to protect their interests and ours.

Happy Independence Day!
